British Values

In late 2014 the Government decided that ‘British Values’ should be promoted within the School’s curriculum. Since then we have worked hard to make sure our school has a climate that enables this and that students are familiar with the core principles, which are as follows:

  • democracy
  • the rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

It is our strong belief that our provision surrounding this prepares our students for life in modern Britain. Below is a brief outline of some of the routes we take to do this.

  • Assemblies 
  • Sixth form enrichment afternoons 
  • Main school enrichment days
  • Tutor time discussions and student voice
  • Spiritual, moral, social and cultural education – all teachers in every subject area take the opportunity to incorporate SMSC
  • Literacy lessons are used as an opportunity to learn more about British values whilst developing their reading, writing and listening skills

What should we hope to gain as a society from this and why have we endeavored to create a curriculum that prepares our students well for life in modern Britain?

  • To enable our students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • So that students can distinguish right from wrong and respect the law
  • To encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely
  • So they acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
  • To promote tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions
  • So that our students develop a respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
