The Ripley Academy

Year 6 Open Events

After School Tours at The Ripley Academy

I would like to extend an invitation to you as a prospective parent to take a tour of The Ripley Academy.

As you may be aware, the deadline for secondary school applications is October 31st, and so I would like to give you the opportunity to see what we at the Ripley Academy have to offer, to meet senior members of staff, and view the school’s facilities.

On Thursday 24th, Friday 25th, Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th September we will be holding four open events where prospective parents can have a tour of The Ripley Academy and meet members of the school leadership team. In order to maintain social distancing these tours will run after the school day from 4pm – 6pm. There will be a limit to the number of people on each tour and we will only be able to welcome parents who have pre-booked. We will confirm your place and tour time following your booking.

Should you wish to book a place on one of these tours then please contact us at or phone us on 01773 746334. If any of the scheduled times are inconvenient then we can organise alternative times on request.

I look forward to meeting you soon and if you have any queries in the meantime or would like to arrange an alternative time to visit then please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Ripley Academy welcomes applications for 120 places in each school year.

Derbyshire County Council handles all aspects of the application process for The Ripley Academy. This includes application appeals and changing schools. Derbyshire County Council acts as a clearing house for admitting all Derbyshire pupils to secondary schools, and decides the rules for getting places.

A summary of information from the council's website about the application process and admission criteria is shown below.

Applying for a Secondary School Place

If your child was born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 and is in their last year of primary school you should apply for their secondary school place by 31 October 2020. They will start school in September 2021.

If your child attends a school outside of Derbyshire which operates a different pattern of education and they are due to transfer to secondary school phase in September 2021, you should also make an application by 31 October 2020 and this information will also apply to you.

The application process is quick and easy and you can also find information about how to choose a school and apply for a place in DCC’s Guide for Parents.

You'll get your offer on 1 March 2021 and if you're unhappy with the decision you can make an appeal. You can do this online and more information can be found on the secondary appeals web page.

How to Apply

From 10 September 2020 you can apply online or if you don't have access to the internet you can apply by phone from 10 September 2020 by calling the Admissions and Appeals team on 01629 537479.

If your child goes to a Derbyshire primary school, you will receive admissions information from the school some time during the week commencing 10 September 2020. DCC would prefer you to apply online - although you can still apply by phone or request a paper form if you prefer.

You only make one application and you are invited to state three preferences on it. This is the only application form you need to fill in - whether you do that by phone, online or on paper

Please note, if you apply online or by phone, your application will be acknowledged automatically. If you complete a paper form you will only receive an acknowledgement if you provide a stamped addressed envelope with your application. Parents are advised to obtain proof of posting.

If you need further information visit or call our admissions and appeals team on 01629 537479

If you wish to access independent advice or information on school admissions or appeals you can contact Coram Children's Legal Centre or call 08088 020 008.

Special Educational Needs

If your child has a Statement of Special Educational Needs, his or her transfer is dealt with through the statement. You should contact the Special Needs Section of Derbyshire County Council.

Changing school at other times

You may want to apply for your child to change schools other than when they are due to start secondary education. This could be because of a change of address.

You can do this online at any time of year. There is added guidance in the changing schools section to help you through the process.

If you live outside of Derbyshire you should apply through your home council even if you want to apply for a place at a Derbyshire school. You can find your home council through the Directgov website.
